Durmitor, Montenegro
Montenegro is a fairly small country situated East of the Adriatic Sea, bordering Bosnia, Serbia and Albania. YUCPC have been involved since 2004 in expeditions to the Durmitor National Park in the North of the country; a limestone plateau rising to an altitude of over 2,500 m adjacent to the Tara Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe. It's not hard to see where the appeal is from a caving perspective!
In 2004, 2007 and 2010 we joined the international expeditions to the southern part of the region organised by ASAK. After scrutinising maps over the winter of 2010, we decided that the remoter region in the North might be worth a visit, so three of us returned in 2011 to see what it had to offer. We came back feeling pretty positive about the potential there: we found plenty of entrances, several good looking areas for further prospecting and there were no signs anyone had descended any of the entrances previously. This lead the way for 10 of us to return in 2012, then 17 the following year.
