Report by Matt Ewles

This was a superb end to our Wales week, with a bright sunny day by the river a few of us had scouted a couple of days earlier. A slightly awkward climb up the side of water cascades keeps most tourists at bay, and leads after ten minutes walking to a lovely grassy area in the sun right outside the old mines of Pontneddfechan. Below, some waterfalls and deep pools provided opportunity for jumping into water from great heights (we'd seen people doing it the previous visit so knew it to be safe). A combination of leisurely wandering round the old mines, jumping into the river and swimming (wetsuits essential) and sunbathing and eating in the sunshine was a really nice end to the week. Would highly recommend this again but only in really nice weather. To get there, park at the big climbing rock near Pontneddfechan (sp?) and follow the river upstream, soon climbing up a bouldery canyon.
