I was warned that i was route finding when i arrived at the container and found the original giants hole trip was off (too much water) bugger must get to do some derbyshire/peaks caving soon! after 1 week inbetween trips i didn't think i would be able to forget the route and with a little encouragement from chuck and laura "we will hit you if you get lost" i was filled with confidence when this soon changed to "we will hit... read more

Nemo, Jon and I had a spritely start after a well needed early night and began cooking porridge for the team that were heading down from York. The Chapel was a hive of activity as dozens of SUSS woke up, hoards of Chesterfield daytrippers arrived and all the TSG members who were down having a working weekend all converged. The tame keyholders had all disappeared and when there was a big push to get everyone from all the other clubs... read more

I suprised myself by joining this trip as the previous day, during my epic duel with Titan I'd promised myself I wouldnt be going underground the next day (it was a good trip just hard about a term's worth of hardness) but as Chad and the others arrived I found myself unable to resist and before I knew it I was smelling of PVC again and on my way to the entrance. There isnt much to add about the trip... read more

I still can't believe how high the cave ceiling was I can see why the passage was named surprising. Anyway Calm down Kevin you make it seem like I was eager.

Kevin wrote...

Hehe. Steven definately was not eager at all times, especially when he saw my choice of pint afterwards. How did you describe it again?? It wasn't very nice.

Steven wrote...

What was it unicorn? I don't think I was harsh on it I just said Wags to Witches was nicer. And when wasn't I eager?

Kevin wrote...

You made Wags to Witches sound much nicer, which it was :)

I absolutely love doing any trips in the Gaping Gill system, and this was no exception. Yeah it was raining when we were getting changed and everyone always moans about the long walk (which I actually always enjoy), but to see Gaping Gill with so much water was fantastic (even the water coming down South East Pot was a lot). There was even more water than a recent underground camp in the system that I was on, all the waterfall... read more

Mike Topham and Ian Jack also present. My dad's 60th birthday present trip! Super efficient day as we had to get back to York in time for Hobby's last night in town. In Bernies at 9.45 with a pre-order of yorkshire puddings through my mum (pre-ordering is the way forward) and on our way by 10.30. We saw the bar pot team just arriving-slackers! Got to bull pot farm and changed in the changing rooms as it was very rainy! Various... read more

Probably one of the wettest days in the Dales I have seen for some time! Giants Hole was very much off and Wretched Rabbit and Mistral were on! After a cold and wet walk across the fell, we found Easegill Beck in flood, although with the water a long way off reaching Wretched Rabbit entrance. We made quick progress to the head of the first of the climbs. This was rigged with a ladder, as two... read more

A trip description by Matt, he's underplaying the amount of time he spent at Eureka junction mesmerized by the water Matt sat there for ages, although i'm sure he must have been to Eureka junction many a time!!! Our Freshers, sorry guys, were excellent this is not an easy cave; but they all handled it with ease(gill) hehe. on the way up to stop pot some people climbed up to the side whereas i just squeezed up because i could... read more

A great any-weather first or second trip, providing people don't mind mud! Navigation was pretty easy just using surveys & descriptions from t'interweb. A bit of random direction-taking took us straight to the gate to the Ease Gill beck bacnk which was a bit interesting to cross...certainly more water than I've seen there before. Now they've changed the entrance and replaced the planks there was a bit of confusion as to which was the right hole, but after finding Link we... read more

Awesome trip! My first trip in the UK since Wales. After an efficient start in the morning, we sat off to the peaks. Chuck took the wrong exit in Sheffield, :) this resulted in an interesting route trough Sheffield, but we managed to find Hathersage quite quickly anyway. I had a a very nice breakfast in Hathersage, which required me to choose from 10 different ingredients! in my case lots of bacon and fried bread :) We set of to Giant's... read more

Turned out to be a very fun trip. The weather in the Dales was much worse than on Saturday, so Longchurn was called off. Instead we went about finding holes in the ground near The Station Inn. I was pleasantly surprised by the length of the active streamways that we found. Everyone certainly got a good introduction to what cavings about. A very good and viable back up plan in the future.

Matt wrote...

Although disappointed by the fact we had to sack off Long churn (horizontal rain is bad news), we ventured up to the Station Inn at the Ribbleshead Viaduct to look at some smaller caves up there, on Chucks recommendation. Things were not looking good as we changed in strong wind and driving rain, but once into caving gear it calmed down and we headed over towards the caves. I have no idea which cave it was we ended... read more

excellent, these smaller trips seem to be the ones that are overlooked as good trips but these caves were streamy with some crawling through water some climbing, overall a good introduction to the varying skills used in caving. by the way i love streamway caves, i could do these all day and not get bored

It all got off to a good start with the standard caving departure time of 7am however bad weather in the Dales prevented our weekend plan of doing Vespers followed by Nick pot (one day I'll get to do this cave!). Our back up of Ireby Fell didn't seem sensible either, so alas someone came up with doing Bar pot and camping underground. Urgh. Not recovered yet. At the risk of using a somewhat overused phrase, this was an AWESOME trip. My estimate of 5-6 hours underground was a little optimistic (actual time underground a little under 10.5 hours - a very late return to York for a Sunday night). Due to numerous previous Easegill adventures we were lucky to have done all of the passages at least once before, and often many times. However we still managed to lose... read more

Not really a YUCPC trip, as we didn't use a single item of YUCPC gear. We went in via the Mere entrance as it was a dry day following a lot of dry weather (this entrance is usually sumped). On a fine September morning, as the sun was just beginning to rise over the Vale of York and the blurry shadows formed by the trees were rapidly shortening, four of the nation's greatest adventurers were gathering for a quest that would push not only their limits, but the limits of what was humanly possible. They would boldly go where no man had ever gone before. This is not their story. ... read more

scum could have been level two at times but mainly down to sweat and personal scummyness (level 5- due to no shower the night before). the prettiest cave i have seen in the uk and all in a very short section, well worth a visit, but be warned hard level of two due to contortions to avoid breaking formations.
