Tuesday August 1st 2006 Poulnagollum - Poulelva via Cotters Gallery Members: Adrian Turner,  Andrew Vick,  Chuck Holder,  Debbie Flowers,  Dominic Galliano,  Emma Welsh,  John Singleton,  Matt Ewles

Adrian wrote...

When finding caves in Ireland, completely ignore selected caves. Take the OS coordinate of the cave and use a map. Btw, I saw a mouse in Craven Canyon.

Matt wrote...

After rather a lot of faff, choosing to follow the Selected Caves guide of how to find Poulelva... which was a load of rubbish, we went with grid ref instead, and found a style across the wall mentioned in the Caves of County Clare guidebook. By the time we had rigged the other team had overtaken us. A great cave, and a fun trip. We took the entrance undeneath the plaque, the others too the other entrance, both of which lead... read more

I'll be controvertial in saying this was my favourite cave in Ireland! I really enjoyed it! The streamway at the start managed to bend in a completely different pattern to the pathway that had been cut. Debbie enjoyed rolling along some bedding planes, and I enjoyed going past the frothy foamy bits of river. Unfortunately we did have a little problem route finding past this, but meant we got to see a little more along some side routes. Also think Chuck... read more

Nicola wrote...

The day began well..we found the cave easily enough (apart from the spiky things and nettles)and then found a better way round to it. when we returned to the car we had aquired a little friend- a small annoying dog (kevin liked it, the rest didnt). then the first thing went wrong-gover forgot his helmet and had to drive back for it (in full caving gear!) while he was gone the dog continued to annoy/amuse us, and i teased it with... read more

Quite possibly the most beautiful cave I have ever seen. Now just want to go back and photograph it!

The long crabwalking streamway was a bit boring but the end of it was definalty worth it. A stunning chamber of huge formations - some of the best I've ever seen. Love to get down there again with a camera! The scummy mudd pools were fun - mmmm mud up to the hip!

YAY MUD FIGHT!!!!!!

Gary wrote...

Great fun trip, unfortunatly it was spoiled by me being stupid a falling knee first off a traverse into the streamway and being in pain the whole rest of the trip. Crawling on one knee is damn hard work! Mud fight was great fun - we all went into battle - and looked like it after. Matt had so much mudd on his face it was hard to tell who he was!

John wrote...

I loved Poll Donut. This was my first time to lead and navigate a trip. Yey! And we got out! Yey again! The mud fight was awesome. I can see mud dripping from the ceiling.... Ahh it's Debbie and Dom. Take that.... @#%#$&!!!

Matt wrote...

Hehe! Great trip! Nice variety of things (crawling, stomping, etc) and lots of interesting things to see. We made it down to the muddy passage leading to the blocked entrance, where we had a mud fight, and I clogged Doms ears up with mud (hehehe). The return up to polldonough was a little bit harder to navigate. A flat out crawl back near the start of the cave bears right to the column chamber near the polldonough south entrance,... read more

May I say I was the most innocent in attacking when it came to the mud fight, mostly due to my lack of aim! But the fight was fun!! Our team most defintely "won" that one! I was removing mud from my ears for quite a few hours later, and it was flowing out when I was showering! Dom

Follow the obvious path.... And there it all goes wrong, what path?!?

Matt wrote...

Quite a tricky cave to find! Turn right off the road at the vague path/overgrown wall near the top of the hill, and Cullaun 1 is well hidden beneath bushes and trees on the left hand side in a sort of clearing. Several other upstream entrances might be found by accident if you're unlucky too! We aimed to complete the rather long round trip, however, with the number of people in party this proved to be unlikely. Navigation by the... read more

A trip of many parts. The first part was amazing fun and fast. Stomping down the streamway upto the pitch before the sump. Some amazing formations too! The way back was a little less interesting.... Oxbow route mostly crawling... The last bit, which Andy, Kev and I did was amazing. Very crawly, but some amazing things to see. Also lots of cave shrimp! We came out of cave via a bog in the middle of a forest, was really cool! Dom

Loved this cave and a brilliant start to the holiday. Climbing out by ladder was soooo nice, no nasty SRT :) This cave really set the scene for the style of caving we were to discover in Co Clare. However this was the start of the fly swams which I appeared to attract for the duration of the holiday. And Yes I did shower every day and keep my caving gear clean!

I went for extra scum on the basis that I managed to get out of the cave with wellies full of water and scum in my ear. The scum in ear was caused by a tight, but fun crawl that led from the top of a side passage to the left back to next to a dig back into a chamber with the stream. The others wussed out of the crawl.

Well at last we got through to Wretched Rabbit without getting lost! A nice speedy and efficient trip - form riging Lancster Hole we were out of Wreched Rabbit in 2h 57m, somewhat better than our previous attemps. We met Gover, Kev and Laz coming the other way in the connection between Stop Pot and Wretched Rabbit passage, but didn't see them again until over 3 hours later! We had a leisurely trip and drank lots of Cherryade, plus we got disorientated because the main drain was so high it was spilling up into the high level route and creating so much mist we couldn't see where we were going. Also, we gave the others well over an hour headstart, and we had to prussic up the entrance pitch. My legs really ache today though, god knows why as this is normally an easy trip

Kevin wrote...

Lancaster does now smell quite Cherryadey. This was a fun trip, twas my first down wretched rabbit, which I enjoyed alot. The twisty stream passage was a good variation to the stompiness and traversing I had become accustomed to in Easegill. Unfortunately I did still have to do my least favourite part, Stake Pot, for the second time in a month. Derigging the entrance was considerably easier than last time, no krabs lost and no undraft of irritating particulates to... read more

I think our main delay was waiting on the surface and drinking tea, after nabbing some tea bags from some RRCPC bloke; and marvelling at the quietness of his car! Quite a fun trip but the level of water around was quite silly, although not in the bits we were in: I think it was a good job that we didn't do the streamway through to Link! Cherryade was great for drinking in the cave because it gave a nice, pleasant (artificial!)... read more

Can't help if I get a little worried at times.... Trip was good fun, considering I normally don't like doing Easegill high passages!!! Couldn't believe we managed to find our way through! I've been lucky enough that both times I've attempted this we've never got lost! Dom

Matt wrote...

Great fun (especially this time with a wetsuit!) A nice swim through the lake lead to Big Bertha boulder choke. Somewhat more awkward than I remembered it, but last time I was freezing and it has been blotted from my memory. Particularly more annoying on the return journey. Once through, it was relatively easy going with stompy-stompy passages and wading. We made it to the sumps, and as water level was low, we were able to pass... read more

such an impressively immense cave - wow!! just in awe all the way down!!(and hell am i glad i was going down not up!!) well done gover for rigging it!! it's so incredibly huge!! Enjoyed the whole cave a lot, both titan and JH, except for being incredibly knackered on the way up, but yeh definitely a superb trip!!! woo!

Adrian wrote...

Such an awesome trip 8) The Titan entrance shaft was impressively over engineered, it took us half an hour to open it! Had a wibble while waiting for Gover to rig the main shaft, but once I got into the aven and could see just how big it was, I was just amazed. It was huge!! Glad I didn't have to go up it though. The boulder choke to get through to JH was amusing,... read more

Superb! A truely amazing trip, and all went without a hitch! Apart from us (the JH-Titan) team not having any slings, though this was really only an issue on the entrance to JH and we got round that with some interesting rigging. Quite quick progress down to the bottom of JH, and then commenced the very muddy trip through to Titan. A bit more tricky to navigate than expected. Really worth heading down to the Peaks early for (especially as it avoided us being caught up in the seven-seater-saga ;-p) A rather large 50-60m entrance pitch (I think this is the 210 entrance) leads down to the waterfall chamber, where an apparantly bottomless pool of crystal clear water awaits. You have to swing away from it, as falling in would probably be rather deadly! A passageway leads off one way, within 5m arriving at a hole in the... read more

We actually managed to find it first time in more or less a streight line! Its amazing how much easier it is when its not thick fog! A very leasurly trip, without any faff for a change. It was bloody hot on the walk up though which made the duck very refreshing :)

Kevin wrote...

This cave was great fun. We also learnt that Audrey is actually a sheep.

Great fun trip, especially when you find it straight away without two hours wandering around lost! For future reference, park on left hand side a minute drive after White scar in the big layby next to ruined building. Follow the obvious path up the hillside all the way to the top (over a wall). Once at top by limestone pavement, bear left towards just above the bottom of the right hand slope of Ingleborough. The cave is in... read more

Its funny to see so many silly tourists in the bottom of Gaping Gill. The que at 4pm must have been at least and hour and a half and the people at the BACK already looks very cold! We combined the round trip with a wander down to the East Canal. I haven't done the cave for a while to know for sure, but I think water levels were pretty high, as the streamway was pretty wet (though nothing compared to Valley last week). Still my favourite cave! It was good to see some different parts of it, and to break in the neo-fleece. The one part I didn't enjoy was derigging the deviation at the last pitch!!
