I did it! The round trip! I'm so happy! I'd been looking forward to this one for a whole year since I got a taste for this cave last time (on my second trip ever). Really pleased I got down into the sewers and got nicely wet. Matt - you've proved your wooseyness by finding the dry alternative route (but well done). Would be interested in exploring some of the other parts of this... read more

A superb trip and well done to Andy and Dom for remembering the way and navigating so well. With the exception of a few minor detours we hardly went wrong. The trip gets a 4 for hardcore, because of the entrance series being rather damp and grotty, and the 7 hour epic adventure being very tiring indeed. Forget the gym, or circuits... this has to be the ultimate test of cardiovascular fitness! Constant climbing and stomping! Owing... read more

This trip was actually quite faffy... we waited in the hut for an hour, but when we arrived we found the old guys were still getting changed and nowhere near ready to rig (the one ladder.) It was a freezing change, with most of us being wimpy and getting undressed in the 7 seater. The cave was pretty cool, apart from the initial stench of death at the bottom of the ladder. It wasn't particularly hard, although we did all wuss... read more

Really good fun had all round! Its quite small, short and scrotty but such a laugh. We were totaly caked in mud from head to toe and had to jump in the river after. It was nice to explore a fairly un-touched caving area. Lots more potential in the North York Moors so we must return. Read my other report about the other stuff we did in the [[a href="http://www.yucpc.org.uk/reports"]]Reports Page[[/a]]

Matt wrote...

Really good fun, the ultimately in short scrotty caves. With few passages measuring more than a couple of foot in any axis, lots of crawling, with knees and hands squelching in nasty reddy-brown mud several inches deep. We think we got to the bit known as 'the sphincter' which leads onto quite a bit more cave, including axphixia passage (joy!) however, we mistook it for a dead end we reckon. Nontheless a fun, 1-2hr long session, lots of exploring to be... read more

I'd say there was a fair bit of faff involved, seeing as it took Ollie an hour to decide he'd rather go to B & Q than come caving! Yes, uber scrotty cave, very slimy and tight in parts, and it went round in circles! Very confusing! Helpful signpost warning us to wait in the main chamber (10m in) (for what?!) and not to go any further, when all the interesting stuff was past there! We suspect a pirate hide out... read more

Aimee wrote...

Without a doubt the most hardcore cave I've ever been in, and there be monsters down there... :o

Matt wrote...

Only short, but some really interesting giant red moths seem to have made home here. At the very back of the cave, look upwards and there will be loads of the scattered around the roof :-)

Saturday March 11th 2006 Rumbling Hole Members: Adrian Turner,  Kevin Francis,  Nicola Gover,  Richard Gover

Another rediculously efficient trip. Very little water so not too challenging. Seemed a lot easier than last time. Good fun, but too short.

Adrian wrote...

How come I'm the only one to put a three down for change? Come on, it was snowing!

Richard wrote...

If you can count the individual snow flakes then it doesn't count :p

Kevin wrote...

It wasn't that snowy Ade!! It wasn't even actually that chilly undressing! Plus cos Nikki packed most of my stuff away for me it was a lot quicker change than normal.

aren't i nice? i rigged everything for the first time :) was a bit slow but got my confidence up :)

Sunday March 5th 2006 Flood Entrance Members: Ellie Jones,  Kevin Francis,  Steve Gilbert

Kevin wrote...

This was a fine Sunday cave. There was a good blend of crawling, stomping and ropework. It took us a while to find the right entrance, but once we had decided that the first hole we came across was perhaps a little too awkward even for Steve it was easy going down Wades once we had managed to get all our lights working! The first few pitches were gentle going with a good crawl between the first and second. The big... read more

We did indeed have some minor issues identifying wades and flood. The guide says that flood is 80m from bar. This is probably measured from path down into bar. Flood is the first small shake-hole where the entrance cuts back towards the path and drops into a small chamber/rift. The way on is very tight! (I almost for stuck, due to, 1) muscular buttocks, 2) a layer of ice on the wall (brrr!) and 3) a tackle sack on my head!). The... read more

An obscenely efficient trip - right from leaving the garage at 8:20am to getting back in time for a takeaway in York. Found the cave pretty much straight away (slightly squalid entrance up the hillside from the most obvious hole). First pitch a very pleasant 15m with 2 deviations (the guide suggests it is tight and awkward - it isn't). Short crawl/stoop downstream to the head of the big pitch. The Traverse of the Gods is very... read more

Supurb trip and it was great to visit this fairly newly opened entrance to Gaping Gill. We made it through to Mud Hall via a spectacular 40m pitch from the roof. Definatly one for ladders rather than ropes on the first 4 pitches, as some are quite tight and not yet P-hangered. Defintly remember to go feet first all the way to the first pitch! :p

Kevin wrote...

Knackering, though oddly I'm not as sore today as I have felt afer other caves! The crawls were interesting with tackle sacks to say the least... I agree with Gary in that following instructions is good, there was some interesting yoga going on from Andy at the start, let alone noises!! Some of the formations we saw were pretty amazing, it was great to see them looking so pristine. I was a little disappointed GG wasn't as powerful as the last time... read more

Unfortunatly didn't make it to the bottom as it took us two hours to find the entrance even with a compas, map and GPS! In fairness, it was mainly due to the thick fog and not being able to see my hand in front of my face! When we did finally get in, there was a bit of faff and re-rigging requried. That expression on my face in some of the photos was because my ass had an unfortunate high speed encounter with the sports hall wall while derigging the deviation the previous Thursday. Rigging this cave scared the life out of me, it's []REALLY[] exposed! Ninety odd metre verticle shaft with a couple of reblays on the way down. Not forgetting the big slope of mud at the bottom, spending a remarkably short time down there, we were out in time to see sunset :)

Ok so we only got five meters into the cave but... I LOVED IT!! Just my kind of thing. Unfortunately Gary got stuck and couldn't get his stop and hand down the front of his oversuit to decend. Attemted for the second time, we did find the way on but it turned into a scrotty twisty crawl and I ended up to my chin in a streamway! Quite good fun and I would like to get to the end some time. We decided to turn round due to winging from Ade (no change there LOL) and Ollie having some 'issues' with the length of his legs! :p

A caving epic :) Made it throught in about 5 hours with no getting lost - all due to extensive reccy trips. Dom had great fun rigging the entrance to Lancaster Hole because there were already two other sets of ropes going down it! A top cave as always! I didn't get to do Birthday Pot on my birthday, but never mind, I'm sure I will survive. Tons of water going down the final pitch, but we all managed to say dry apart from John who some how swung into the waterfall on his way down :p All very well organised and no real faffage, apart from a couple of 'issues' getting up the final climb to the bottom of the entrance shaft.

FUN FUN FUN!!! It was great fun having so many people down the same hole in the ground. :) Waiting around at the bottom was felt like an underground tea party. We really should try to bring cakes and tea next time. The little vertical gap at the exit was such a pain to get through. Exceptionaly dry, even the sump was 2m lower than I've ever seen it. Super efficiant trip to the bottom via Guly and The Ninty even with 4 tackle sacks between the three of us! :p For future refereance 1 spit is requied for one of the climbs. Yey, we discovered the route that bypasses the second pitch in Gully route... so much quicker but not as much fun.

John wrote...

It was a very nice cave with no wet bits or much crawling. It was warm and dry throughout. The top of the "Ninety" pitch can be a bit tricky to get off but other than that I thought it was pretty straight forward. I used my new helmet/light for the first time and it was brill 8) no need to return to Bernies afterwards Yey :p

A great fun, nice long trip, and satisfying to make it to the bottom. Was nice to discover the shortcut avoiding the second pitch, though I went down the pitch anyway cos big dangly ropes are fun :-) though was rather nervewracking to derig! The dead sheep at the entrance was rather nasty, and I wasn't pleased about accidently dunking my tacklesack into it oops A great days caving! :)

A gentlemanly start saw us leave the container at 10, after a night on the good stuff. Rather a role reversal for me to be waking james up on the sofa! This time however, i failed to have an attack of the "fear" Oh, and i got to do it all on shiny new gear! mmm, shiny!
